Food Coalition
Click here to view full size picture Several years ago with the help of the United Way Basic Needs Committee, the Ecumenical Assembly, as an outreach project, formed the Ecumenical Food Pantry Coalition. At that time we drafted our mission statement.

In the summer of 1994 the existing coalition accepted a 2 year grant partnership provided by the Community Food and Nutrition Program funded through the Family Independence Agency.

The expanded group renamed itself: The Northwest Michigan Food Coalition.

Our membership includes representatives of community meals, emergency shelters, FIA, MSU Extension FNP, pantries, soup kitchens, Telamon, and WIC from a 6 county area, including Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Wexford counties.

Our mission remains unchanged although the name was shortened to: The Northwest Food Coalition.

Our Mission, as members of the Northwest Food Coalition is to meet the hunger needs of people in our 6 county area while continuing to address the greater issues of poverty.

We acknowledge our responsibility to:
  • provide a working network among the programs of the coalition
  • share our resources
  • provide opportunities for community participation in our programs
  • create and initiate food drives to supply and replenish pantries
  • maximize the utilization of available resources and funds
  • educate ourselves and the community regarding issues of poverty and hunger

One of our original and ongoing goals is to take part in at least 5 community food drives per year.

We presently do the following food drives

  • W.K.L.T. Food Drive

  • National Letter Carriers/Rural Carriers

  • A Place At The Table

  • Take Out Sunday

  • World Food Day &

  • Empty Bowls

  • The food that is collected is divided between the Food Coalition members. This is a big advantage of the coalition. Sharing is a huge success with the coalition. If any pantry is low on food, the others will share what they have.

Monthly meetings are held to share food, get updates on state and national hunger issues and to plan and implement our food drives.

In the past we have had training programs to assist us in the following areas:

    • Dealing with volunteers

    • Media Enhancement

    • Cultural Sensitivity
